Lunch: lamb (leftover from last night’s roast) and mint jelly on wholemeal bread, a bowl of salad consisting of nothing more complicated than salad leaves, tomato, cucumber and avocado, with a simple vinaigrette of olive oil and Balsamic vinegar. Verdict: delicious!

There’s something wonderful in doing things the right way – I don’t mean according to somebody’s rules or something. I mean, when you do things the way you want to do them. I wanted to eat food today that was only my diet. I really wanted that, and as I’m eating this food, I’m feeling good. I feel positive and in control of this thing. I know there’ll be moments when I won’t feel like this, but I do know that as long as I eat this way, I’ll feel like this. (more…)

Losing Momentum

I’ve been here before and I can tell you I hated it then, and I hate it now. It’s not so much a fail position as a No-Man’s-Land. I’m suspended on a high-wire, neither running smoothly nor crashed and burned – but I can see the crash site from here as I dangle, ungainly and unc0-ordinated.

The last three weeks have been hard work. Hard in that in my head, I’m going to do better each day but the reality is far from better and way closer to worse. I haven’t given up – haven’t even come close. I haven’t even considered giving up, which is the strong thread I’m holding onto at the moment.

I knew this would happen. I knew I’d get to the point where it would all start to fall apart, but I thought that I’d taken enough steps to prevent it this time. But now, as I look back over the last 7.5 weeks, I know full-well that I didn’t take many steps at all. I meant to, I wanted to, but I didn’t. I never got around to doing all the things I’d meant to do and now I’m suffering from it. (more…)

The Need for Food

One of the complaints I hear most from people who carry extra weight but who struggle to lose it is, “But I hardly eat anything. How come I never lose any weight?”.

These people skip breakfast – or just have coffee, will have a sandwich for lunch and steamed vegetables for dinner, or a bowl of breakfast cereal instead. They consume a tiny number of calories and yet still, no matter what they do, their bodies will shed no fat.

The answer is in the question. It’s also in our genes and there is nothing we can do to change it, because the cause is something that actually helps us to survive. (more…)

Hardly a Diet

When we think about a diet these days, we all have the same image of celery sticks, dry biscuits and lettuce leaves: tasteless food and an endless feeling of hunger. A constant feeling of being dissatisfied and wanting more. And the unending desperation to eat something solid and substantial. I’d like to say that these kinds of diets are well out of fashion but alas, there are some out there that still treat the body this badly.

The studies done into ‘deprivation dieting’ (which is what the above description… er, describes) have proven one fact above all else – when you deprive your body in such a way, you both decrease your metabolic rate (because your body thinks starvation time has come around again) and increase your subconscious need to binge eat. These are both unconscious, physiological body responses to a sudden and sustained lack of food. These responses are genetically built into us and were what helped our ancient ancestors to survive fammine. What they are not, is any help to losing weight. (more…)

Years ago I was watching a documentary about a tribe in Africa when I saw something which stood out in my young imagination: here were people who thought that larger women were especially beautiful because they embodied fertility, success and wealth for their husbands and the tribe in general. For these people, being thin only reminded them of their occasional periods of hunger. Overweight people were valued and cherished. Alas, it seems even these examples of different cultures and their different ways of looking at larger sized people have been mown down by Western ‘ideals’, according to a new study. (more…)

Stressing the Point

Everybody gets stressed. It’s a fact of life. Even people who live the least stressful lives experience stress at some point.

We all react differently to stress. Some of us get angry or irritable, some get teary or just quiet. And yes, there are those of us who eat.

Part of the problem about eating when you’re stressed is that stress itself actually makes you eat. (more…)

There’s hardly a person out there who hasn’t heard of eating disorders – and you’d be forgiven for thinking they’re only about people starving themselves to death, with names like anorexia and bulimia stamped all over the news. But that’s not all eating disorders are about. An eating disorder can simply be described as an abnormal attitude towards food and eating. It can just as easily be seen in somebody who eats too much as one who doesn’t eat enough. Eating disorders are bad, physically and psychologically, and, like a wrecking ball swinging through a derelict building, they create havoc wherever they go. And the worst part about them is, they usually start in childhood.

Causes of Obesity Part 2 – 11 Ways Your Body Makes You Over-Eat

If you think over-eating is something we’ve just recently invented in the West because we have an abundance of food, then you’d be wrong. Both humans and animals have always had the capacity to eat way more than they need to. It’s a survival trait, and goes way back to when mankind were hunter-gatherers. Before we were able to grow our own food or herd our own animals, humans had to make the most of any food they found, because they had no idea where their next meal would come from. Or if they’d ever get another meal. Those excess calories were stored as fat, for when there was no longer an abundance of food. So eating beyond what the body needs in a single meal is an ability we all have, regardless of how much we weigh.

How Society Hates Fat People

They make movies about us and think it’s hilarious that we eat and wear big clothes. Comedians and radio ‘personalities’ find we’re the biggest source of humour because we don’t fight back. When they talk about a large celebrity, the inevitable ‘pig eating’ sound effects emerge in the background, and the entire studio laughs aloud. Fat people are the entertainment subject de jour, and everybody is getting on the bandwagon. All the while, people with weight problems die a little more inside, hating themselves, blaming themselves, and believing all the crap that’s said about them.
